I'm a fourth-generation South Dakotan descended from German, Irish and Norwegian immigrants and a long line of family business owners. I grew up in Platte, SD, where my great-grandfather constructed the first building on Main Street. My wife, Sharon, a retired University of Sioux Falls psychology professor, and I live in Sioux Falls, where we raised our three sons and are longtime members of St. Michael Parish.

I'm a proud product of our state's public education system, graduating high school in my hometown of Platte and earning a  BA in Mass Communications from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. My first job after college was as a newspaper reporter in Richmond, Indiana covering local government.

I retired in 2022 after nearly four decades spent assisting South Dakota students, high schools and post-secondary schools with post-high school planning as the executive director of the Council on College Admission in South Dakota.

My previous experience includes serving in administrator and director roles for various organizations as well as independent consulting.

A Solid Secretary of State

As an experienced administrator and organizational director, I will bring the grounding and professionalism that South Dakotans need and expect from their Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State's office is responsible for a host of South Dakota business, election, and general services, including

  • Business registrations and filings

  • Campaign finance oversight

  • Election administration and voter resources

  • Notary public commissions

  • State Board of Finance duties

It's about more than just pushing paper. These responsibilities require serious, sober-minded attention to detail, efficiency, and diligence - not chasing wild-eyed conspiracy theories down rabbit holes. As your next Secretary of State, I will serve the voters, business owners and people of South Dakota with integrity and a clear head.
